One of the most common questions we get as a Florida wedding photographer and videographer duo is, “What does a wedding day timeline actually look like?” It’s a great question because there isn’t just one answer. Every wedding is different, and your timeline should reflect what matters most to you.
Once you’ve chosen your venue, your timeline is one of the biggest planning decisions you’ll make. It affects everything from how relaxed the day feels to how much time you’ll spend with your guests. If you’re still searching for the perfect venue, be sure to check out our guide on How to Choose the Best Miami Wedding Venue.
Today, we’re sharing two real Florida wedding timeline examples from weddings we’ve photographed. One includes a first look, and one doesn’t. By the end, you’ll have a better idea of which approach fits your wedding day best.

A well-planned timeline does so much more than keep everyone on schedule. It allows you to actually enjoy your wedding day. Your timeline determines when portraits happen, how much time you’ll have with family and friends, and how rushed or relaxed the day feels. It also plays a huge role in your photography and video. Natural light changes throughout the day, especially during the fall and winter months in Florida. There isn’t a “correct” timeline. The best one is the one that fits your priorities!

Kat and Matt chose to do a private first look before their ceremony, and it gave them a very relaxed wedding day at the Mansion at Tuckahoe. They saw each other privately, exchanged hugs, and soaked in the moment before anyone else arrived.
From there, we moved right into their couples portraits. We also photographed their wedding party and immediate family before the ceremony. That meant they didn’t disappear for a long portrait session after saying “I do.” Instead, they enjoyed cocktail hour with their guests and only stepped away briefly for sunset portraits and a few extended family photos.
Here’s what their day looked like:
| Time | Activity |
| 12:30 PM | Getting ready |
| 2:00 PM | First look |
| 2:15 PM | Couple’s portraits |
| 2:45 PM | Wedding party photos |
| 3:15 PM | Immediate family photos |
| 4:15 PM | Hide before ceremony |
| 4:30 PM | Ceremony |
| 5:00 PM | Cocktail hour |
| Sunset | Golden hour portraits |
| 6:00 PM | Reception begins |
One of the biggest benefits of a first look is flexibility. Instead of trying to fit every portrait into cocktail hour, much of the photography is already finished before the ceremony even begins.
Photographer Tip: A first look doesn’t just change your timeline. It gives you more flexibility, allows for a slower pace, and often means you get to spend more time celebrating with your guests.

Not every couple wants to see each other before the ceremony, and that’s completely okay. Yessica and Michael decided to wait until she walked down the aisle, and it made their ceremony entrance incredibly emotional.
Even without a first look, we were still able to photograph quite a bit before the ceremony. We captured separate portraits of the bridesmaids and groomsmen, along with sweet first looks between Yessica and her dad, stepdad, and brother. Then, after the ceremony, we moved into family portraits, wedding party photos, and couples portraits.
Their wedding took place in November at The Gardens of Weber Manor. Sunset that day was around 5:30 PM, which meant we were racing daylight. By the time we finished portraits, it was already dark.
Here’s what their timeline looked like:
| Time | Activity |
| 12:00 PM | Getting ready |
| 2:30 PM | Bridesmaids and groomsmen photos |
| 3:15 PM | First look with Dad |
| 3:25 PM | First look with Stepdad and Brother |
| 4:00 PM | Ceremony |
| 4:30 PM | Family photos |
| 5:00 PM | Wedding party photos |
| 5:15 PM | Couple’s portraits |
| 6:00 PM | Reception begins |
The day flowed beautifully, but it also highlighted how important sunset can be when planning your timeline.

One thing many couples don’t realize is how much sunset changes throughout the year in Florida. A summer wedding gives you plenty of evening light. A late fall or winter wedding is a different story. In November, sunset can be as early as 5:30 PM.
That’s why I almost always recommend scheduling your ceremony at least 90 minutes before sunset if you’re not planning to do a first look. That gives us enough daylight for family photos, your wedding party, and couples portraits without feeling rushed.
If you’re getting married during the fall or winter months, you’ll also want to check out our guide on The Best Time to Get Married in Miami: A Seasonal Guide. It walks through what to expect during each season and how it can affect your wedding day.
As your Florida wedding photographer and videographer, helping you build a timeline around the light is one of the ways we make sure your day feels smooth from beginning to end.

Both approaches create beautiful wedding days. It just depends on what feels most like you.
A first look may be a great fit if you want to spend more time with your guests, prefer a relaxed pace, or love the idea of sharing a private moment together before the ceremony. Skipping the first look may be the better choice if you’ve always dreamed of seeing each other for the first time at the altar or if that tradition feels especially meaningful to you. There isn’t a wrong decision!

There isn’t one right answer. Some couples love having a quiet moment together before the ceremony, while others want to save that first look for walking down the aisle. Both create beautiful memories.
Couples portraits typically take about 20 to 30 minutes. Family photos and wedding party photos will add additional time depending on the size of your group.
If you’re not doing a first look, I generally recommend starting your ceremony at least 90 minutes before sunset. That gives us enough natural light for portraits afterward.
Yes. Florida sunsets happen much earlier during the fall and winter months, so your ceremony often needs to begin earlier than you might expect.

One of the biggest benefits of working with an experienced Florida wedding photographer and videographer duo is that you don’t have to figure your timeline out on your own. We help every couple build a schedule that fits their priorities, makes the most of the available light, and allows plenty of time to enjoy the people who came to celebrate with you.
